Cortona Bronze pour 1

Hey everyone! It is so great to be back in the beautiful US of A! I have all of my videos uploaded now to my youtube channel. Check them out and let me know what you think please. Also, nearly all of my pictures have been uploaded onto my facebook so check those out as well, I have them listed as public so anyone can see them. I will be posting my favorite videos as posts here as well as my favorite videos. Also, I will be sharing links to other peoples videos as well. Here is a video my friend Angelo Choi took of our first bronze pour, I am on slag duty insuring that the metal flows freely and no junk gets in the molds. Jacob Brault and Morgan Kennedy are on pour. My casting for this pour was of a Moses sculpture I made, pics coming soon.  The whole bronze class this semester was really great. Everyone stepped up to the plate in their own way. Enjoy the video! Again, good to be back home and more wrap up coming soon!

Here is the link to the video.

Italia Update!

Been an insane week with bronze pour business all the time!

First off, here is an update on marble, I even included a clay sketch I did which I sometimes use as a model. These images are still a couple days behind but better than nothing right?

Secondly, I have found a connection that is decent for video uploading so here are some videos from this week.

I am also in the process of getting videos of our actual pour from a friend of mine, Ill post it as soon as I can, here is the day after though!

Ciao, Thanks everyone for making this trip possible, I have learned a lot and have been inspired by all that I have seen. I will have a show in January in Athens GA with all of my work from Italy in it. I look forward to seeing all of you there!

Moses soon to be in Bronze

Here are some pictures taken by my friend Walker of my Moses sculpture in wax. This piece mimics what I am doing in stone. I have been experementing with all medias seeing what each one excels in as well as the weaknesses of each. I have been consumed by Moses while in Italy and have done studies on paper, in wax, in clay, and finally the piece I am working in stone. Anyways here is a sneak peak of what the bronze will look like(you have to ignore the pipes and sticks though!

Working Carrara marble in Italy!

Just wanted to show some work in progress(WIP) shots of my marble project. this block was a part of an even larger block that I drilled and split. I then spent 3 hours leveling out the base using a 3,4,5 triangle to find the right angle. I then went through and cut off a substantial amount from the left and right sides of the block after drawing a rough version of the piece onto the front. after that I used the saw again to remove some marble from the front. I then began a much more precise method of measuring my wax model exactly and multiplying it by 2.5 so that my final marble piece will be 2 and a half times larger than my model. once I had some solid points such as the top of the sternum and the ends of the clavicle I drilled into the marble to that exact point and basically connected the dots with the pneumatic hammer for the torso. That is my process so far, I wont be sculpting the back until the end so that I cant really go "to far" I am looking forward to the final piece and the knowledge I will learn on the way. I have already done a lot of experimenting and have already learned a ton.

Also, my wax piece will be caste in bronze as of next week! more to come on that and this piece.

Click "view as slideshow" after the jump or click each one separately to see the large versions.

Greeting from Italy!

Ciao! Well with any uncharted territory comes new problems. I will not be able to upload nearly as many pictures and videos as I would like while I am here because the internet is so slow. That said I have uploaded most of my important videos in a fairly low quality to share. Once I get back to the states I will re-upload all of my videos in high quality. Until then I will be uploading some pictures, and some low def. videos. I recorded each day of Rome and Florencein my sketchpad and will be typing all of those up starting now!

Om Aug 28-29
Left from Atlanta, I hated saying goodbye to Rashaida! I was ahead of schedule and everything went smooth but everyone on my flight spoke Dutch. I didn't sleep a bit on the plane. My connection was nuts! Our flight was late so I had to sprint to make it. When I arrived I had no bag! I also couldn't find my GA sign holders, finally I gave up and made my own sign, that got me found. I had to wait for the next flight from Amsterdam to Rome to get my bag. Road the bus to the hotel. Stayed up for supper then crashed 30+ hours awake!

On Aug 30th
Went to the ancient roman sights, Colosseum, forum, and the arch of Titus. I loved the cold water from all of the fountains in Rome. For lunch all of the other students ate near the Colosseum, I didn't want touristy food and I needed to find a bank so I went off on my own and ended up finding some great Italian! I spoke some really rough Italian and got some great lasagna in return. I forgot to mention I missed our group bus ride in the morning so I had to figure out the buses by myself, my Rick Steve's phrase book saved the day! After lunch we went to the Borghese! It was awesome! The Bernini's were incredible. I loved Persephone and Dante. I sketched it(click here for pic), the male ended up hectic looking while the girl has much calmer lines. It is mind boggling that he was 22 when he did Apollo and Daphne. He pushes marble further than I knew was possible, The leaves were crazy! We visited the spanish steps, I didn't see the point. We then went to a creepy crypt which gave me the creeps so I left pretty quick.

How to work in Marble!

Here is the video I promised about carving marble, hope you enjoy!

Bronze castings are in base making phase, very close to done, a little harder to work from home though with no access to tools. I will have pictures up soon of each finished bronze piece.

Also, I have created an event on my facebook for my going away to Italy party, check it out and rsvp!

20 Wax Figures, Soon to be in Bronze!

I modeled all of these figures directly in microcrystalene wax, no mold making was used. I have battled all summer trying to keep them from melting/falling over. Any supports will be removed once the figure is cast in bronze. The Bronze pour is probably going to happen on Monday and then I will clean up the castes, try some different chemicals to get different patina's and then mount them on marble or wood bases. I will try to get a video of the bronze pour on Monday(UPDATE: CASTING IS HAPPENING THURSDAY WILL UPDATE AFTERWORDS) to give everyone an idea of what it is like. Please, if you like what I am doing support my trip to Italy by clicking donate at the bottom of the page, thanks so much! Assuming all of these come out in bronze, anyone who donates $250 or more will receive a sculpture of his or her choice(ask for availability).
